Mosquera to Lead Assembly Women and Children Panel

(TRENTON) - A tireless advocate for victims of domestic violence and working class families, Assemblywoman Gabriela Mosquera has been named the new chair of the Assembly Women and Children Committee for the 218th legislative session.

Mosquera was appointed by Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin.

"Assemblywoman Mosquera is a strong voice in the chamber for New Jersey's families, especially for the well-being of women and children," said Coughlin (D-Middlesex). "She will do an excellent job at the helm of the Assembly Women and Children Committee as we move forward with a progressive agenda to grow the economy, create jobs and strengthen our middle class."

The Assembly Women and Children Committee considers legislation which directly affect the status of New Jersey women and families and the welfare of children.

"I'm honored to assume the duties of chair of the Assembly Women and Children committee," said Mosquera (D- Camden, Gloucester), who was sworn-in on January 9th for her third term in the Assembly. "Violence against women is a critical concern for me.

"The effects of hunger, poverty, pay equality, and discrimination are few topics I would also like to see the committee discuss and address this session. The committee aims to move legislation that would improve the quality of life of women and their families in New Jersey."

Mosquera's career in government began as an intern with the Office of Congressman William Pascrell where she dealt with casework ranging from immigration to social security issues. She also interned with the Assembly Democratic Office and, after graduating college, joined the office in a full-time capacity as a Policy Researcher and later a Policy/Operations Assistant. She also served as Director of Policy for former Assemblywoman Nilsa Cruz-Perez of the Fifth Legislative District.

Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Mosquera immigrated to the United States at the age of three. Her family first settled in Union City and later moved to North Bergen. She went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from The College of New Jersey and later earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration from DeVry University's Keller Graduate School of Management.
Mosquera will also serve on the Assembly Higher Education Committee and the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Assembly committees will resume on January 29th.
