Conaway Welcomes Additional Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

Murphy Administration Seeking Up to Six New Dispensaries

Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee Chair Herb Conaway (D-Burlington) today praised Gov. Murphy's plan to add more medical marijuana dispensaries to better serve the thousands of patients currently in the state's medical marijuana program.

The Murphy administration today announced it will seek up to six new applicants to operate medical marijuana dispensaries. There are currently six dispensaries operating in the state.

Conaway is the lead sponsor of a bill (A-3740) to make medical marijuana more accessible to patients who could benefit from it. The bill would, among other things, require the state Department of Health to issue a request for additional medical marijuana dispensary permits.

"This is wonderful news for people who rely on medicinal marijuana to treat a variety of health ailments. Six dispensaries to serve the thousands of residents who participate in the medical marijuana program is simply not sustainable. As the program has expanded so has the demand. There are more than 25,000 patients currently participating in the program. We have to make sure that we are equipped to serve these patients to help minimize any lengthy delays in treatment. Adding more dispensaries to the current total will help alleviate any backlog and ensure that patients have access to relief sooner rather than later."
