Wimberly, Reynolds Jackson Bill Creating Specialty License Plates for Renowned Sorority Signed into Law

Law Creates Delta Sigma Theta License Plates

Legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly and Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds Jackson to create a New Jersey specialty license plate for the renowned sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, was signed into law by the Governor on Friday.

"Specialty license plates allow residents to proudly exhibit their support for a worthy cause, a hobby or an organization," said Wimberly (D-Bergen/Passaic). "Delta Sigma Theta would be added to the state list of national service organizations that residents can represent with a specialty license plate. Its members who live and work in New Jersey will now have another way to show pride in an organization with a long, esteemed presence in America."

The law (A-2401) authorizes the creation of a special Delta Sigma Theta sorority license plate. The design of the license plate would be chosen by the chief administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission along with the National President of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

Delta Sigma Theta was founded in January of 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University. Since its founding, over 200,000 women have joined the organization and it currently has 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters around the world.

"I am happy to now be able to display that I am a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, and the goal of this piece of legislation is for other members in our state to feel that way, too," said Reynolds Jackson (D-Mercer). "These license plates will give hundreds of members of Delta Sigma Theta the opportunity to honor an organization with a rich history of service and leadership."

Assemblyman Raj Mukherji (D-Hudson) is also a sponsor of this law.
