McKeon: Consumers Must Understand Risks of the Internet, Take Precautions
to Ensure Safety of Personal Information
Assemblyman John F. McKeon (D-Essex, Morris), chair of the Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee, released the following statement Monday after hearing testimony from the New Jersey Bankers Association regarding financial cyber security in recognition of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month:
"Consumers must understand the risks of the internet and take precautions to safeguard their personal information. This includes utilizing multi-factor authentication for online accounts as well as fingerprint identification and security keys for mobile phones; regularly updating software on internet-connected devices; and checking privacy settings on online accounts and apps.
"We now live in a society where functioning without the internet is unimaginable. Whether it's remaining connected to family and friends, conducting business or working remotely, the internet has become an integral part of our everyday lives.
"These conveniences, however, expose internet users to breaches in their confidential information, personal privacy and personal safety. This month helps us to remember that remaining cautious, responsible cyber users in this digital age is crucial to our cybersecurity."
