Community Service Award Named for Asm. Angel Fuentes
(CAMDEN) - The Camden County Human Relations Commission has named a community award after Assemblyman Angel Fuentes (D-Camden/Gloucester) due to his community activism and his years of leadership. The Ramona Gonzalez/Angel Fuentes San Juan Bautista Community Award was presented at the annual San Juan Bautista Parade on Sunday to an individual involved with organizing the parade who embodies the spirit of the Commission.
"I am deeply honored to be chosen as one of the namesakes of this award," said Assemblyman Fuentes, former member of the Human Relations Commission. "I hold the Parada San Juan Bautista and the Human Relations Commission close to my heart, as well as the efforts of both to promote unity and cultural awareness."
The Parada San Juan Bautista was founded in 1957 by a group of parishioners from Our Lady of Mount Carmel/Fatima Church, including Ramona Gonzalez. What began as a modest parade has grown into the month-long celebration of culture and tradition it is today.
"The Camden County Human Relations Commission is pleased to announce the creation of the Ramona Gonzalez/Angel Fuentes San Juan Bautista Community Award. The namesakes of this award are two individuals who have shown leadership in addressing the critical needs of the community and have demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to public service," said Brett Waters, Human Relations Commissioner and Award Chairperson.
"The men and women who dedicate their time and effort to bring this parade to the City of Camden each year deserve our recognition and our thanks for what is a truly special day. I am so pleased to be a part of that, and to be named in this award along with Ramona Gonzalez, who gave so much to the city," added Assemblyman Fuentes
The Human Relations Commission was established in 1993 and is comprised of volunteers appointed by the Freeholder Board. The Commission's advocates harmonious relations among all individuals and groups of every race, religion, ethnicity, nation of origin, ability and sexual orientation.
