Responsiblities

The Deputy Executive Director oversees the annual budget review process, including the preparation of the Annual Appropriations Act, and analyzes the fiscal impact of all legislation considered by the Assembly. She also advises the Assembly Democratic Caucus on public policy initiatives.

Mrs. Messenger-Gault serves as the Democratic Aide to the Assembly Budget and Appropriations committees.

Background

Mary Alice Messenger-Gault was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and raised in Old Bridge.

Mrs. Messenger-Gault is responsible for the preparation, deliberation and execution of the Assembly’s legislative budget review process and the crafting of the Annual Appropriations Act.  In addition, she assists in the oversight of the office's research activities and committee operations and undertakes special projects on behalf of the Speaker.

Mrs. Messenger-Gault has worked in the New Jersey Legislature for almost her entire professional career, after brief stints as a tennis instructor, band manager and substitute special education teacher.

Mrs. Messenger-Gault is about to embark on the review of her 22nd budget, proposed by the seventh governor to hold office since she has worked for the New Jersey General Assembly.

In her spare time, Mrs. Messenger-Gault serves as the team leader for the Legislature's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). She lives in Bordentown with her husband, Robert, and their feline daughter, Stinkerbell.

Education

Mrs. Messenger-Gault graduated from the College of William and Mary in Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Philosophy.
