N.J. Assembly Speaker Prieto Statement on Christie’s Line-Item Vetoes

‘Anyone who contends Gov. Christie is an honest man has spent too much time sitting in the sun with him or in traffic on the George Washington Bridge’

(TRENTON) – Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-Hudson/Bergen) released the following statement Wednesday on Gov. Christie’s line-item state budget vetoes:

“Eliminating language requiring the preschool expansion money be spent on districts with high concentrations of at-risk children is yet another glimpse at Gov. Christie’s bad character – and why he should have never been trusted.
“But it’s not just the preschool expansion language that’s concerning – in cases such as food assistance, Christie’s cruel language veto directly means lost money for struggling families.
“Vetoing the language eliminating the family cap for Work First NJ denies basic assistance to poor children.
“Cutting language to improve the timeliness of paid leave claims processing hurts working families who need that program to be effective.
“Gov. Christie has broken his word yet again, and no one should be surprised. Anyone who contends Gov. Christie is an honest man has spent too much time sitting in the sun with him or in traffic on the George Washington Bridge.”
