Lampitt and Downey Bill to Require Education in Schools on Consent for Physical and Sexual Contact Becomes Law

(TRENTON) - In response to Governor Phil Murphy signing a bill (A-2190) into law that will require school districts to incorporate instruction on the law and meaning of consent for physical contact and sexual activity, Assembly Democratic sponsors Pamela Lampitt and Joann Downey released the following statement:

"It's incredibly important, particularly in the age of #MeToo, that we educate our students on consent and safe behavior in relationships," said Lampitt (D-Camden, Burlington). "It has been estimated that 1 in 5 female high school students have been physically or sexually abused by a dating partner. It's my hope that by talking about consent at an age appropriate level in sixth through twelfth grade classrooms, adolescents will have a better understanding of the meaning of consent and how to respect their partners. These are lessons they will carry with them throughout their lives."

"Talking about the meaning of consent in our educational curriculum in New Jersey will give our students the tools they need to build healthy romantic and sexual relationships once they are ready," said Downey (D-Monmouth). "They will learn that they can say no if they're ever uncomfortable, to respect their partner's decision to be or not to be sexually active, and understand the emotional, social and relational impacts of sexuality. By educating them with these principles throughout adolescence, we teach our students that consent is always required and respectful."
