Mazzeo Statement on Bill to Create Commission to Study Property Tax Assessment

Legislation Cleared by Assembly Panel

Aiming to find ways to improve real property tax assessment in New Jersey, Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo released the following statement on his bill (A-4826) to establish a commission to examine the State's current assessment practices and make recommendations, which was recently approved by the Assembly State and Local Government Committee:

"Our current property tax assessment process is costly and burdensome," said Mazzeo (D-Atlantic). "The Property Tax Assessment Study Commission will aim to find ways we can improve this process, including taking a look at Gloucester County's pilot program which shifted property assessment to a county-based system. This program reportedly saved the county over $2 million a year in assessment costs and increased overall efficiency. These are promising results that could help us develop a more effective process. It's time for us to identify what's working and what's not, and move to develop new practices."
