Chiaravalloti, Benson Resolution Designating Second Week in March as "STEM Week" in New Jersey Approved by Assembly

Aiming to highlight the importance of New Jersey students participating in educational, internship and work study programs in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), a resolution to designate the second week of March as "STEM Week" in New Jersey was approved 80-0-0 by the full Assembly Monday.

Assembly Democrats Nicholas Chiaravalloti (D-Hudson) and Daniel Benson (D-Mercer, Middlesex) are sponsors of the resolution (AJR-156) and released the following statement:

"The purpose of this resolution is to stress the significance of STEM education, hands-on learning, and exploration. Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman to go into space often says, 'students learn science by doing science,' and that's what we want for New Jersey students--to foster an environment where these young scholars explore by doing.

"Students can then take that same education and inquisitiveness into a STEM career which continues to be one of the best paying fields where skilled workers are in great demand."

The bill was introduced on September 17, 2018 and cleared the Assembly Science, Innovation and Technology Committee on March 11, 2019. It now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
