(TRENTON) – With the goal to provide real time updates on NJ TRANSIT accessible transportation routes and ADA stations, legislation sponsored by Assembly Democrats Yvonne Lopez (D-Middlesex) and Daniel Benson (D-Mercer, Middlesex) was approved Monday by the Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee.
The measure (A-3510) would require NJ TRANSIT to operate a website dedicated to providing updates on its accessible transportation routes, including incidents like delays, closures, or outages that may impact a customer’s experience. The same information would also be made available on the NJ TRANSIT mobile app.
Assemblywoman Lopez and Assemblyman Benson released the following joint statement:
“Riders with disabilities often need to plan ahead for their trip to ensure their needs will be accommodated, including choosing accessible bus or train routes. Delays, equipment failures or other roadblocks are more than just small inconveniences for these riders. If an elevator is broken at an ADA train station, for example, they would not be able to exit the train at their intended destination.
“NJ TRANSIT should make information on any issue that may impact a disabled customer’s trip easily available online and on its mobile app. It’s a common sense solution to a problem too many riders have experienced.”
