BARNES: CHRISTIE CUTS CREATE SCHOOL DAZE

Notes Disparity Between E. Brunswick and Metuchen Cuts

(TRENTON) — Assemblyman Peter J. Barnes III (D-Middlesex) released the following statement Monday as the Assembly Budget Committee heard from the Department of Education:

“Government must be leaner and more efficient and we must reduce costs, but Gov. Christie’s cuts would hurt senior citizens, middle-class families and jeopardize the education of our children.

“Some of it seems to lack rhyme or reason.

“East Brunswick loses 32.4 percent of its state aid while Metuchen loses 89.7 percent. That certainly is not shared sacrifice.

“Voters fearing property tax increases made their voices heard last week, and the defeated school budgets will undergo municipal scrutiny, yet we’re still wondering how these cuts that put the tax burden squarely on senior citizens and the middle-class were even calculated to begin with.”
