Barnes to Introduce Bill Restructuring Law Enforcement Oversight

(EDISON) – Assemblyman Peter J. Barnes announced today that he will be introducing legislation that would restructure the internal affairs bureaus of all law enforcement agencies in New Jersey. Currently, each municipal and county police department has full oversight of their respective officers. This bill would designate the Office of Attorney General with managing police misconduct investigations.

“With literally hundreds of law enforcement agencies in New Jersey, ranging in size from just a few officers up to several hundred, there is no uniform internal control,” said Assemblyman Barnes (D-Edison). “Transferring oversight will ensure that allegations of police misconduct will be investigated promptly and fairly,” Barnes added.

The bill will be formally introduced in the General Assembly in January.
