Benson: Civil Service Protections Must be Safeguarded

(TRENTON) — Assemblyman Daniel R. Benson (D-Mercer/Middlesex) released the following statement on Thursday on the Civil Service Commission vote to weaken Civil Service protections, despite the Legislature moving earlier this year to invalidate the effort:

“This vote is an affront to the people of New Jersey who have been well served by Civil Service protections.

“Civil Service has ensured taxpayers have qualified people filling key roles and protected government from patronage and the waste it brings, so today’s vote is concerning for policy and fiscal reasons. I fear this is simply more of this administration’s anti-worker agenda.

“But I’m also concerned about the legality of the vote, considering the Legislature voted last session to invalidate this effort to destroy Civil Service. The vote deserves close scrutiny, and I will be talking to my fellow legislators and others on all possible next steps to address this concern.”
