BURZICHELLI: GOV’S SHORT-SIGHTEDNESS ON WALLACE REAPPOINTMENT THREATENS INTEGRITY OF JUDICIAL SYSTEM

(TRENTON) — After Gov. Chris Christie’s announcement Monday that he would not be reappointing Supreme Court Justice John E. Wallace Jr., to the bench, Assemblyman John J. Burzichelli (D-Gloucester) issued the following statement:

“Gov. Christie characterized his action today as bringing ‘balance and change to the Supreme Court.’ It will not.

“Instead, by ignoring the more than 60 years of bipartisan even-handedness of past governors, Gov. Christie unavoidably and undeniably injected the taint of politics into New Jersey’s judicial nomination process.

“Every action by every judge in the state is now similarly tainted. Every decision handed down will now have to be viewed under both a legal and political lens before it can pass muster. Plaintiffs and Defendants will forever wonder if their cases were decided on legal merits or political ones.

“With a single act the governor has undermined the stability and the integrity of New Jersey’s judicial system.”
