BURZICHELLI: NJTV PLAN DOES NOT MATCH STANDARD FOR PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISM

(TRENTON) – Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland) released the following statement Friday on plans by NJTV to use students to file news stories:

“I value giving students every opportunity to gain experience and learn in the field and my support for higher education is clear, but there is a time and place for everything.
“We were promised that NJTV would be a top-notch professional broadcast television station on par with the best in the nation. Whether it has lived up to that standard so far remains debatable, but professional television stations do not have students filing breaking news stories.
“They have professional journalists.
“It remains to be seen how this plan works, but relying on students to file stories does not seem to be a match for the high-quality, professional standard that New Jersey was promised and is entitled to receive from this station.”
