BURZICHELLI: RED TAPE REVIEW REPORT OFFERS A ‘ROAD TOWARD MORE REFORM’

Says Assembly Committee will Continue its Reform Efforts

(TRENTON) – Assemblyman John Burzichelli on Monday said the report released by the Red Tape Review Group upon which he served should serve as a key guide toward easing the rules and regulations that have impaired New Jersey’s business environment.

Burzichelli (D-Gloucester/Cumberland/Salem) said he expects the Assembly Regulatory and Oversight Committee that he chairs to scour the report. The Assembly has already advanced bills sponsored by Burzichelli to ease cumbersome rules and regulations.

“These rules and regulations may mean well, but they’ve largely done nothing more than help stagnate economic growth and hurt our business environment.,” Burzichelli said. “We’re now on the road toward more reform and implementing a more reasonable system that protects public safety while promoting economic growth.”

The Assembly has approved legislation sponsored by Burzichelli and Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-Union) to require all state agency rules to be published in the New Jersey Register. The bill (A-2464) also bans state agencies from using regulatory guidance documents, unless authorized to do so by state law.

Burzichelli’s committee has also released legislation (A-2486) to prohibit state agencies and departments from adopting new rules and regulations that exceed federal standards, unless authorized by state law.

“New Jerseyans have been waiting for too long for us to find ways to reduce the mountains of regulation affecting their daily lives, while still honoring our responsibility to protect the environment and citizens.,” Burzichelli said. “From the hours of public hearings and working alongside the lieutenant governor, it was clear that she and this committee were serious about making this process fair and bipartisan. The Assembly has already taken steps to ease burdensome regulations, and now this report gives us a blueprint for how to get more reform done in Trenton.”
