(TRENTON) – Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland) released the following statement on criminal justice reform legislation (A-1910) he’s sponsoring that was held Thursday by the Assembly Judiciary Committee:
“This reform legislation is sweeping and complex, with questions ranging from handling bail for violent criminal defendants to establishing bail alternatives for some others and finding a way to pay for legal services for low-income residents. As I’ve said, this is a complicated system to fix, and the bill just needs more work before it’s ready for a hearing.
“I want to be clear though – I remain fully confident this bill is going to get done. All three branches of government remain in discussions on this bill and I feel comfortable saying it’s everyone’s intention to reach a successful conclusion sooner rather than later. We know that by working together we can reform this system and create a safer and more just New Jersey.
“I look forward to advancing finalized legislation in the coming weeks.”
