Calabrese & DeAngelo Bill to Support Meals on Wheels Clears Assembly Panel

Legislation (A-5513) to allow taxpayers to make voluntary contributions to the nonprofit Meals on Wheels through a designation on their State tax return was approved Monday by the Assembly Human Services Committee.

Bill sponsors, Assembly Democrats Clinton Calabrese (D-Bergen, Passaic) and Wayne DeAngelo (D-Mercer, Middlesex), released the following joint statement:

“About 20,000 seniors in New Jersey depend on meal delivery programs to have access to nutritious, hot meals that help them lead healthy lives. Without Meals on Wheels, many seniors – particularly those over age 75 – would face the threat of hunger.

“The core mission of Meals on Wheels is to ensure no senior ever goes hungry because they are unable to cook, go grocery shopping or afford healthy food, but Meals on Wheels is also about so much more. Volunteers perform a safety check for seniors while delivery meals, and offer companionship and comfort. As more than half of meal recipients live alone, this is especially important.

“This legislation will give New Jersey taxpayers the opportunity to support this wonderful program on their tax return, and help Meals on Wheels continue to grow and thrive in New Jersey.”
