Calabrese, Sumter and Pinkin on Bill Expanding Election Notice to Increase Voter Turnout Now Law

With the aim of increasing voter participation in New Jersey elections, Assembly Democrats Clinton Calabrese (D-Bergen, Passaic), Shavonda Sumter (D-Bergen, Passaic) and Nancy Pinkin (D-Middlesex) sponsored legislation to require election notices to include information about where to find your polling place.

Sponsors of the measure, signed into law by the Governor on Friday, released the following joint statement:

“Voter participation has been improving in New Jersey, which is extremely encouraging. But, despite increasing enthusiasm among residents, voter turnout is still not near where it should or can be. With so many factors at play a lot of unnecessary barriers to voting remain, accessibility being one of them.

“For many, something as simple as not knowing how to find their polling place can affect their likelihood of voting. And so, giving voters information on where to access details about their polling place as part of election notices makes it easier. We hope to boost participation to best represent New Jersey and its people at the polls. No one should feel they can’t vote because they’re unsure where to go.”
