Bill Would Re-Appropriate $3M from Dam, Lake, Stream and Flood Control Project Fund
(TRENTON) – The full Assembly on Monday passed legislation sponsored by Assembly Democrat Marlene Caride to commence flood control projects along the Passaic River Basin. The measure was approved 78-0.
Caride explained that the intent of the legislation is to begin flood control projects desperately needed in Passaic County to maintain the Passaic River Basin. Caride noted that this legislation will fund dredging in areas including North Arlington, Lyndhurst, Rutherford, East Rutherford, Wallington and Passaic.
“Since early 2012, New Jersey has seen the worst in ravaging storms and flood damage,” said Caride (D-Bergen, Passaic). “The severity of the weather is not only a concern, but also the frequency of the storms and rain which makes it extremely difficult for homeowners and businesses to recover efficiently. There will be more storms and rain causing more flood damage. We must do what is necessary to anticipate and plan for these storms to curb the damage. This funding will help us alleviate and minimize any future flood damages to our towns and communities along the River.”
Under the bill (A-2675), there would be a reappropriation from the “Dam, Lake, Stream, Flood Control, Water resources and Wastewater Treatment Project Bond Act of 2003” will provide the first year’s funding to address desnagging and shoal dredging needs in municipalities within the Passaic River Basin that have suffered the most from repetitive losses due to flood damage. The monies would be made available due to project deferrals, cancellations, withdrawals and cost savings from the previously funded Lower Saddle River Project.
Identical legislation is under consideration in the Senate.
