(7th DISTRICT) – Assemblyman Herb Conaway, M.D., today touted legislation that would allow local governments to create set-aside programs for business enterprises owned by or that employ veterans.
“The service that our veterans have provided our country is immeasurable. As they transition from soldiers to entrepreneurs, we should ensure they have the resources that will help them be successful,” said Conaway (D-Burlington/Camden). “This bill would set aside a percentage of government contracts for veteran owned businesses. Considering the sacrifices that our veterans have made for our country, this is just one small way to return the favor.”
The current law allows municipal and county governments to create set-aside programs for women, minorities and small businesses. The bill (A-3933) would amend the law to allow municipal and county governments to create set-aside program for qualified veteran business enterprises as well. The governing body would set aside a certain percentage of the dollar value of total contracts to be awarded as set-aside contracts to qualified veteran business enterprises.
“We owe a debt of gratitude to our veterans. They stepped up and took on the responsibility for our safety while putting their own at risk,” said Conaway. “Being a business owner in this economy can be challenging. This is one way to show our veterans we appreciate their dedication, and are committed to supporting their efforts on and off the battlefield.”
