CRYAN: CHRISTIE INFECTS THE COURTS WITH POLITICS

(TRENTON) – Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Cryan (D-Union) released the following statement Monday on Gov. Chris Christie’s decision not to reappoint Supreme Court Justice John E. Wallace Jr.:

“Gov. Christie’s decision not to reappoint a moderate justice who properly upheld the Constitution and laws of our state shows beyond a doubt that radical conservatism has infected the governor’s office.

“As Christie’s close ally, Gov. Kean, once said, ‘Judges have to be totally free to make up their minds on a particular case. They should not have to think how their opinion will affect next year’s election or even their reappointment. They should simply view the facts of the case and interpret the law. Accordingly, there has not been a judge since the constitution was adopted in New Jersey who has been denied reappointment based on court opinions or political beliefs. The day that happens, the New Jersey judiciary will be undermined.’

“Sadly, that day has arrived.

“Our judiciary has been undermined by Gov. Christie.

“In one swoop, Gov. Christie has destroyed the diversity on our court and sent a message to judges that intellectual and impartial reasoning is no longer welcome.”
