Danielsen Bill to Establish ‘Support the Troops Fund’ Advanced by Assembly Committee

Legislation Assemblyman Joseph Danielsen sponsored to support the families of military personnel serving overseas was advanced Monday by an Assembly committee.

The bill (A-935) would authorize the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to issue specialty “Support the Troops” license plates. The $50 initial fee and $10 annual renewal fee for the plates would help support the families of New Jersey Army and Air National Guard service members who have been mobilized for more than 90 days.

“The stress that military families experience when their loved ones are deployed is amplified if they can’t make ends meet in their absence,” said Danielsen (D-Middlesex/Somerset). “Purchasing specialty plates is an easy way for New Jersey residents to commit to a recurring contribution to military families in need while also expressing their support for those fighting for our freedom.”

The monies in the “Support the Troops Fund” established by the legislation would be distributed to the Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom Yellow Ribbon Grant program administered by the New Jersey National Guard Support for Returning Combat Veterans program.

The measure was advanced by the Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
