Assemblymen Wayne DeAngelo and Daniel Benson and Senator Linda Greenstein (all D-Mercer/Middlesex) on Tuesday announced more than $2 million in Municipal Aid grants to help all nine towns in the 14th legislative district advance a variety of transportation projects without burdening local property taxpayers.
“Without these grants, many towns might have to delay or forego critical projects,” said DeAngelo. “Given how competitive the application process is, we’re grateful that every town in our district was able to secure funding.”
“This funding is welcome news for towns looking to address critical public safety and infrastructure needs,” said Benson. “Being able to address congestion, road hazards, and pedestrian safety without burdening property taxpayers is a win-win.”
“We recognize how difficult it is for municipalities to address pressing needs while staying within the two percent property tax cap,” said Greenstein. “These grants will go a long way in helping towns meet crucial transportation needs without adding an additional burden on taxpayers.”
Out of 628 applications, a total of 373 municipal applicants were awarded grants totaling $287.3 million, which are funded through the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund.
Under the Municipal Aid grant program, each county is apportioned a share of the total funding based on population and the number of local centerline miles. Municipalities compete for portions of their county’s share. Past performance in connection with timely award of projects and construction close-out factor into the evaluation of the Municipal Aid grant proposals.
