DeAngelo & Mosquera Bill to Establish Motorcycle License Plates for Veterans Gains Committee OK

Legislation Assembly Democrats Wayne P. DeAngelo and Gabriela Mosquera sponsored to create special license plates for veterans who own or lease a motorcycle was advanced Thursday by an Assembly committee.

“Veterans take pride in having served their country, and they ought to be able to express that in as many ways as possible,” said DeAngelo (D-Mercer/Middlesex). “With this legislation, New Jersey will join several states across the nation in making special license plates available to veterans who ride motorcycles.”

“While those who have personal or commercial vehicles can drive and proclaim their affiliation with the greatest military on earth, motorcyclists in New Jersey do not have that option,” said Mosquera (D-Camden/Gloucester). “Establishing veterans license plates for motorcycles is another way for our state to show its reverence for those who served.”

The bill (A-2729) would establish motorcycle license plates for veterans. Under the legislation, veterans who were honorably discharged may apply for the plates. The $50 special application fee would be in addition to the normal Motor Vehicle Commission registration fee. MVC thereafter would collect a $10 annual fee for the plates. Fees would be deposited in the “Military Veteran Motorcycle License Plate Fund,” which would be used to support programs benefiting military veterans.

The legislation would permit surviving spouses of deceased veterans to retain the plates.

The measure was advanced by the Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee.
