Assemblyman Wayne P. DeAngelo (D-Mercer/Middlesex), chair of the Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee, on Thursday urged the state Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to expedite a final decision in the three-year long rate reduction case filed against the state’s second-largest electric utility, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L).
In his letter sent following Friday’s ruling in administrative law court, DeAngelo cited the need for “fairness when it comes to affordable and reliable energy services.” The court ruled that a rate reduction of $107.5 million is warranted.
“This recent ruling to lower rates is representative of a major step forward for everyday New Jersey residents.
“The coldest part of the winter months are still ahead of us and it would be fair and appropriate to expedite this matter so that savings can be expeditiously given to ratepayers before they are hit with unnecessarily high home heating bills,” wrote DeAngelo.
“As the BPU considers the judge’s decision, I am hopeful that rate reductions are expeditiously enforced in order to provide rate relief that customers need and deserve,” added DeAngelo. “As Telecommunications and Utilities chair, I remain thoroughly committed to working together with those willing to fight for consumers in New Jersey.”
