Diegnan, Pinkin and Karabinchak Laud the Signing of S-2
(TRENTON) –District 18’s legislators announced on Friday how updating New Jersey’s school funding formula will result in the district receiving an increase of more than $6.6 million for the district’s public schools.
“Every single town in the 18th District saw an increase in funding for their school districts. Schools, like in Edison, that have been underfunded will finally be receiving an increase,” said Senator Diegnan (D-Middlesex). “Even though our schools have been underfunded for so long, I am proud of the hard work our students have put in and the success they have been able to achieve. The increase in school aid will allow them to be that much more successful.”
“Finally, we are on the path to allocating the necessary funds to combat the effects of previous years of severe underfunding” said Assemblywoman Pinkin (D-Middlesex). “While we welcome this increased funding, we look forward to creating and maintaining a more equitable method of funding our schools than we’ve used in the past. This will help teachers teach more effectively, students learn more effectively, and will ultimately make our district and state a better place.”
All eight school districts in New Jersey’s 18th District will receive an increase in funding:
• Edison Township will receive an additional $4,274,601, an increase of 27.6 percent from last fiscal year
• Metuchen Boro will receive an additional $213,591, an increase of 18.5 percent
• Middlesex County Vocational will receive an additional $676,049, an increase of 5 percent
• South River Boro will receive an increase of $665,703, an increase of 5 percent
• Spotswood (Helmetta) will receive an additional $49,625, an increase of 5 percent
• East Brunswick Township will receive an additional $562,987, an increase of 3.1 percent
• Highland Park Borough will receive an additional $97,136, an increase of 2.5 percent
• South Plainfield Boro will receive an additional $81,552, an increase of 0.9 percent.
“Some schools in our district, like Edison and Metuchen, have been chronically underfunded for years,” said Assemblyman Karabinchak (D-Middlesex).” I’m glad that our students will finally receive the funding they have long deserved. This is something that Senator Diegnan, Assemblywoman Pinkin and I have long fought for all over Trenton, and we are proud to be able to deliver for students and taxpayers across the district.”
