Downey, Vainieri Huttle & Murphy Bill to Conduct SNAP Experience Survey Now Law

(TRENTON) – Aiming to improve accessibility and streamline the application process for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Assembly members Downey, Vainieri Huttle, and Murphy sponsored legislation signed into law on Tuesday (formerly bill A-4241) to conduct a survey of county welfare agencies to evaluate applicants and beneficiaries’ experiences with SNAP.

Under the law, the survey would identify strengths and weaknesses of county welfare agencies in processing SNAP applications, formulate trainings to improve application processing, and assess which counties need additional support. The survey would be conducted every two years.

Assembly Democrats Joann Downey (D-Monmouth), Valerie Vainieri Huttle (D-Bergen) and Carol Murphy (D-Burlington) released the following joint statement:

“Without SNAP, many families would struggle to put food on the table, and children would go hungry. Not only does SNAP help lift people out of poverty, but it also helps improve their overall health and well-being. As we continue to grapple with COVID-19, access to food assistance has never been more important. We want to make sure the SNAP application process is convenient, quick and simple so that every family eligible for these essential benefits can easily take advantage of this program.”
