Gusciora Applauds NJ’s First Christie for Siding with Justice in U.S. Supreme Court Marriage Equality Case

Assemblyman Urges Second Christie to Follow Suit

Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Mercer/Hunterdon) on Tuesday applauded former New Jersey Governor Christie Todd Whitman, and scores of other Republicans, for signing a legal brief with the U.S. Supreme Court arguing that marriage equality is a constitutional right.

Gusciora was the lead sponsor of legislation vetoed last year by current Governor Chris Christie, which would have legalized same-sex marriage in the State of New Jersey.

“I applaud Governor Whitman for her willingness to stand up for justice for the countless same-sex couples still fighting for equal protection under the law. It’s particularly refreshing to see this type of nuanced and level-headed approach employed on one of the defining issues of our time when others in the Republican Party continue to put politics ahead of the needs of real people.

“New Jersey’s ‘first Christie’ has shown the courage to stand up for what’s right. I look forward to the ‘second Christie’s’ evolution on this issue as well,” said Gusciora.
