Assembly members Jamel Holley (D-Union), Angela McKnight (D-Hudson) and Benjie Wimberly (D-Bergen, Passaic) issued the following statement Wednesday regarding Senate President Sweeney’s announcement to act on medical marijuana and expungement legislation in the next two months:
“It is unfortunate that we have to take a different route to adult-use cannabis legalization and we could not get this approved through legislative efforts. However, we are now moving forward on two bills that are critically important to New Jersey’s communities.
“Our focus remains on forging a path to real social justice for our citizens. The expungement legislation is still a priority. Making it possible for residents to clear their records, clean the slate will open the doors for employment opportunities, advancement and economic growth for those affected. Over 200,000 individuals will be eligible under expungements.
“We look forward to working with our colleagues in both houses to advance this bill and get it on the Governor’s desk.”
