(TRENTON) – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people in New Jersey have been unable to attend bingo and raffle events. Assembly Democrats Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey (Both D-Monmouth) sponsor legislation, approved by the Assembly 73-0, that would permit bingo and raffle events to be conducted remotely.
Many non-profit organizations such as veterans’ organizations, and volunteer fire companies conduct bingos, raffles, and other games to raise funding for their establishments. The pandemic has made the close quarter gatherings unsafe and the traditional indoor games can no longer happen. The bill (A-4297) directs the Legalized Games of Chance Control Commission to adopt regulations permitting the conduct of raffles and games remotely through the use of communication technology.
Upon Assembly approval of the measure, Houghtaling and Downey issued the following joint statement:
“By utilizing technology, we are able to safely and remotely conduct bingo and raffle events that will allow organizations to continue their community outreach. With creativity, these programs can resume and people can partake in the games they have enjoyed for years.
“Groups who rely on bingo and raffle games were hit hard when they were no longer able to conduct them. This bill will allow organizations to offer the games and services that many enjoy, while also helping them garner much needed additional revenue.”
The bipartisan legislation is also sponsored by Parker Space (R-Morris, Sussex, Warren).
