From Assemblyman Benjie E. Wimberly

Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr. was not just a political figure; he was a beacon of hope and progress for countless families across the state of New Jersey, including mine. His tireless dedication to improving the lives of constituents left an indelible mark on our communities.

As an advocate for employment opportunities, economic growth, and infrastructure development, Congressman Payne Jr. worked tirelessly to ensure a brighter future for all New Jersey residents. His leadership on the Subcommittee for Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials exemplified his commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure which has directly impacted the daily lives of people in our community.

Moreover, Congressman Payne, Jr.’s unwavering support for healthcare initiatives including his advocacy for the Affordable Care Act and efforts to protect children from lead contamination, demonstrated his deep concern for the well-being of every citizen. His initiatives in cancer prevention and response to natural disasters are all a demonstration of his dedication to the health and safety of our residents.

His legacy extends beyond legislative achievements; it encompasses his profound impact on the lives of everyday people. His advocacy for gun violence prevention, his championing of diversity in government contracting, and his preparedness to respond to emergencies have shaped our State for the better. In reflecting on his life and work, it’s clear Congressman Donald Payne Jr. leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion and progress that we should all aspire to continue. He will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever resonate in the lives of those he served. Above all else, I pray his Loved Ones are comforted by the memories, stories and community support during this most difficult time.
