JASEY: ‘ABBOTT WRAP-AROUND’ CO-PAY INCREASE A TAX ON NJ FAMILIES THAT CAN LEAST AFFORD IT

Assemblywoman Mila M. Jasey (D-Essex), a member of the Assembly Education Committee, issued the following statement Monday on the expansion of copayments for the state Department of Education Wrap Program in Gov. Chris Christie’s budget:

“Gov. Christie and Republican’s misguided decision to expand the co-pays for the Abbott Wrap-Around to affect more families is the worst kind of tax increase. This program made it possible for working-class and working poor families – where single parents or both parents work long hours – to know that their children were receiving continuing education and being taken care of while they were hard at work. Now, parents who can no longer afford this service will either have to find another option or be forced to leave their pre-school-aged children without adult and educational supervision for hours a day, putting added stress on families that already have trouble making ends meet. This is the type of tax that disproportionately affects residents of the state’s poorer urban communities.”
