Jasey Calls on Christie to Act Before Atlantic City Tumbles, Creating Domino Effect

Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (D-Essex/Morris) joined with Speaker Prieto on Wednesday in calling on Gov. Christie to exercise his existing authority to help save Atlantic City before it’s too late, rather than demanding the authority to strip workers and voters of their rights before he acts.

“Last week, and again today, Speaker Prieto laid out a litany of tools at Gov. Christie’s disposal under existing state law that would empower him to address the fiscal crisis in Atlantic City.

“The Governor has continued to ignore these facts and demand that the Assembly give him the broad authority to eliminate collective bargaining rights for public servants, as well as the rights of voters to have a say in their government.

“Like the failed state takeovers of the past, this will do little to improve the city’s fiscal outlook, but much to disenfranchise and demoralize residents of an already beleaguered city.

“The Governor has spent far too much time ignoring and playing games with the situation. It’s time for him to heed the Speaker’s advice and use his existing powers to act before Atlantic City tumbles and creates a domino effect,” said Jasey.
