Jasey: Educators Deserve an Apology for This Change in Direction

Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, Assembly Higher Education Committee chair and a member of the Assembly Education Committee, issued the following statement regarding Governor Chris Christie’s decision to abandon the Common Core State Standards, which he chose to adopt in 2010:

“An apology is owed to the educators, parents and school districts for yet another change in education direction. The saddest part of all this is that children in New Jersey have been caught in the crossfire,” said Jasey (D-Essex/Morris).

“Education reform takes considerable time, commitment and resources. Educators and school boards have adopted and have spent the last five years implementing the Common Core Curriculum Standards. The business community has embraced the standards. Now there is yet another shift in direction, even before the Governor’s own task force has reported its findings relative to the PARCC assessment.

“Students, parents, educators and all citizens of New Jersey deserve better.”
