Jasey Statement on CARES Act Funding for Colleges Amid COVID-19

(TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (D-Essex, Morris), chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, released the following statement on today’s announcement by Governor Phil Murphy that $150 million in CARES Act funding will be allocated to public and private colleges and universities for COVID-19 related expenses through the end of the year:

“As we move into the fall semester, our top priority must be the health and safety of students and staff. Our higher education institutions are committed to providing safe learning environments this fall, but investing in things like personal protective equipment, testing resources and increased cleaning and sanitization come at no small cost. Budgets are tight, and the need is great.
“Today, I’m happy to hear that relief is on the way for our colleges and universities. This federal funding will help alleviate some of the burden put on schools by COVID-19.
“However, we must not forget that as long as the virus remains a health concern, colleges will face unprecedented fiscal challenges. We’ll need continued assistance from the federal government to further help colleges address this crisis.”
