LESNIAK, CRYAN AND QUIJANO TO HOST STATE OF THE UNION VIEWING PARTY WITH COLLEGE STUDENTS

Event to Engage Future Leaders in Discussion of National Issues

State Senator Raymond J. Lesniak, Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Cryan and Assemblywoman Annette Quijano will host a viewing party for President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address tomorrow night, Tuesday, January 25 at Kean University.

The event, which will include a question and answer period to allow students from Kean University and Union County Community College to ask questions of the lawmakers regarding the speech and other national issues, will be held at the University Center Game Room at Kean University and is being sponsored by the University.
br>”This is an important program to engage our nation’s future leaders in a discussion of issues of national importance,” said Senator Lesniak, D-Elizabeth. “The success of any democracy is guaranteed by the civil, rational and respectful exchange of ideas and dialogue on issues facing that democracy. By encouraging college students to begin to think about the challenges we face as a nation, we can fan the flames of democracy and encourage a new generation to get involved.”

“With such monumental challenges facing us as a nation right now, it’s important that we encourage our young, emerging leaders to take an active role in understanding these issues and developing their own ideas on how they might play a part in defining their own future,” said Assemblyman Cryan, D-Union.

“The eyes of the world will be upon Washington tomorrow night as the President lays out the latest agenda for our nation. By creating an opportunity for our college students to come together to discuss the collective issues we face, hopefully we can help mold today’s thinkers into tomorrow’s leaders,” said Assemblywoman Quijano, D-Elizabeth.

The event will be held from 7 PM to 10 PM, and dinner and refreshments will be served. President Obama’s address is scheduled to begin at 9 PM. Members of the press are invited to attend, but are encouraged to refrain from asking questions during the reserved Q & A period for students.
