Lesniak, Cryan & Quijano Lead Senate and General Assembly in Honoring Elizabeth High School’s Undefeated, State Championship Football Season

(TRENTON) — Senator Raymond Lesniak and Assembly members Joseph Cryan and Annette Quijano led the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey in honoring members of the Elizabeth High School Football Team on Monday for their stellar achievements in the 2012 football season.

The legislators presented the team with joint resolutions commemorating their achievements during a ceremony on the floor of the Assembly Chamber at the Statehouse.

Most notably, the Elizabeth Minutemen Football team won the North 2 Group 5 State Championship on December 7, 2012, defeating Piscataway High School by a score of 37-33 in a game played at Kean University.

“It is great to see these kids not only excel in the classroom but on the field as well,” said State Senator Raymond Lesniak (D-Union). “Under the leadership of Head Coach John Quinn and his coaching staff, this team has risen to the upper echelons of the state’s football elite.”

In a thriller game, the Elizabeth Minutemen stopped their opponents just shy of the one yard line, then drove the length of the field with no timeouts and one minute to play to secure the team’s first undefeated season since 1989.

“These student athletes shined when it counted,” stated Assemblyman Joseph Cryan (D-Union). “Their undefeated season is a testament to all their training and preparation, game after game.”

“The students, coaching staff and athletic director have made the city of Elizabeth proud and their achievement is an inspiration to the rest of the community” stated Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-Union). “This team will always be remembered as champions.”
