Lopez Statement on Earthquakes in Puerto Rico

In response to two earthquakes and multiple aftershocks that hit Puerto Rico on Monday and Tuesday, which caused severe damage to homes and businesses and cut power to a majority of the island, Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez (D-Middlesex) released the following statement:

“With Hurricane Maria so close in our memory, it’s devastating to witness another tragic natural disaster inflicted upon the people of Puerto Rico. In a matter of hours, homes crumbled to the ground; electricity and water systems were cut off; and countless people were injured. We know at least one person has lost their life, and unfortunately, more may follow.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted, but Puerto Rico will need much more than well wishes to recover from this crisis. It’s my hope that the federal government will act quickly to get food, water, shelter and other resources to those in need.

“New Jersey stands with our American brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico. We will do all we can to assist in recovery efforts.”
