McKeon: Gateway Project Must Be A Priority

Assembly Judiciary Committee Chair John F. McKeon (D-Morris/Essex) issued the following statement Friday following an inspection tour of New York Penn Station:

“The antiquated tunnels and outdated equipment within Penn Station make it clear that waiting any longer to begin repairs would be a grave mistake. One cannot help but recall that had the ARC Tunnel been built, the congestion and delays NJ Transit commuters continue to experience on an almost daily basis nearly would be resolved.

“Moving forward with the Gateway Project in order to improve the state of the busiest section of rail traffic in the entire nation should be a priority for the Trump administration.

“Instead of focusing on introducing more bureaucracy with a private operator, leaders in the region ought to put energy into making sure the federal government funds safe and efficient transportation infrastructure. Failed leadership on this issue got us to the unacceptable state of disrepair we have today. Commuters deserve better.”
