McKEON, JASEY, CAPUTO, TUCKER, SPENCER & COUTINHO URGE RESIDENTS TO ATTEND NEWARK HEARING ON GOV. CHRISTIE’S 25 PERCENT NJ TRANSIT HIKE

(TRENTON) — Assembly members John F. McKeon, Mila M. Jasey, Ralph R. Caputo, Cleopatra Tucker, L. Grace Spencer and Albert Coutinho urged Newark area residents to ensure their opinions are heard Thursday on Gov. Chris Christie’s 25 percent NJ Transit fare hike.

Thursday’s hearing is scheduled from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at NJ Transit Headquarters at 1 Penn Plaza East in Newark.

“It’s vital that Essex County residents make sure their voices are heard on this plan that will burden working class residents who have no other way to get to work besides NJ Transit and also lead to more congested roadways,” said McKeon (D-Essex).

“Gov. Christie’s 25 percent fare hike is no different than a tax increase on working New Jerseyans,” said Jasey (D-Essex). “Residents should educate themselves on this plan and know exactly how hard it will impact them.”

“Taxing commuters is the wrong way to go in this difficult economy,” said Caputo (D-Essex). “I urge area residents to attend this hearing and learn all they can about the governor’s plan and how much more he’s going to force you to pay to get to work each day.”

“Many working class New Jerseyans have no way to get to work other than mass transit and this plan puts the extra burden squarely on their backs,” said Tucker (D-Essex). “It is nothing more than a tax increase by another name.”

“Asking working New Jerseyans to carry the burden of a 25 percent fare hike is the wrong approach,” said Spencer (D-Essex). “It will hurt job growth and economic development and tax commuters already struggling to make ends meet.”

“It’s crucial for residents to make their voices heard on Gov. Christie’s plan to boost fares 25 percent and slash services,” said Coutinho (D-Essex). “This is going to have a direct and negative impact on many New Jerseyans.”
