** MEDIA ADVISORY – Saturday, September 22 ** Speaker Coughlin to Participate in NJ Gleaning Week – Welcomes Volunteers

(TRENTON) – Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-Middlesex) will host an event Saturday to participate in New Jersey Gleaning Week. All produce collected will be donated to M.C.F.O.O.D.S., a community food bank in Middlesex County.

Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers’ fields after being commercially harvested in an effort to reduce waste.

“One of my top priorities as Speaker has been to address hunger in the state, which is a real issue,” said Speaker Coughlin. “New Jersey is one of the wealthiest states in the nation, yet about 12 percent of New Jersey residents go to bed hungry. That’s about 1 of every 8 residents. We need to raise awareness about the needs that exist in this state and take action. I call on all residents to join me Saturday so we can show families who are struggling that we are united in our efforts to fight hunger in New Jersey.”

The event will be held this Saturday, September 22, 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Giamarese Farm & Orchards, 155 Fresh Ponds Road, East Brunswick, NJ 08816.
