Speaker’s Remarks before Assembly Labor Committee

(TRENTON) — Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver (D-Essex) issued a multimedia package Thursday of her testimony before the Assembly Labor Committee on her legislation to raise New Jersey’s minimum wage to $8.50 an hour and tie bar future adjustments to annual changes in the state’s consumer price index.

The bill (A-2162) would specifically increase New Jersey’s hourly minimum wage rate from $7.25/hr to $8.50/hr, beginning on July 1, 2012. It would then require that, starting in calendar year 2013, the state minimum wage be adjusted annually based on any increase in the Consumer Price Index, with the adjustment taking effect on July 1 of the given year.

The measure also is sponsored by Assemblywoman L. Grace Spencer (D-Essex), Assembly Majority Leader Louis D. Greenwald (D-Camden), Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore Jerry Green (D-Union), Assembly Majority Conference Leader Gordon Johnson (D-Bergen), Assembly Budget Committee Chairman Vincent Prieto (D-Hudson) and Assembly Deputy Speaker John S. Wisniewski (D-Middlesex).

The multimedia package consists of a video of the Speaker’s testimony before the Assembly Judiciary Committee and audio of the same.
