N.J. Assembly Speaker Prieto: ‘I Will Put this Bill Back Up Again and Again’

‘Are they here to support someone’s political ambitions, or are they here to do what’s right for the people of New Jersey?’

(TRENTON) — Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-Hudson/Bergen) released the following statement Thursday after Republicans failed to support overriding Gov. Christie’s veto of legislation (A-3593) to require notification of local law enforcement before expungement of mental health records of prospective firearms purchaser.

The bill sponsored by the Republican leader previously passed the Assembly 74-0:

“Today’s attempt was just a first step. I will put this bill back up again and again — as often as possible before the end of the legislative session.

“The Republicans who flip-flopped on this common sense public safety bill should be ashamed and need to look in the mirror, if they can stand it. They must ask themselves this simple question — are they here to support someone’s political ambitions or are they here to do what’s right for the people of New Jersey?

“Those who are here to serve someone’s political ambitions will pay the price with the voters. New Jersey Republicans are a shrinking minority for a reason.

“Those who are here to do the right thing will get more chances to prove it.”
