Now Law: Measure to Codify Automatic Renewal for Vote by Mail Applications

Helping to ensuring greater participation in future elections, legislation (A-5759) mandating automatic renewal of vote by mail applications was signed into law on Wednesday.

Assembly Democrats Patricia Egan Jones (D-Camden, Gloucester), Pamela Lampitt (D-Camden, Burlington), Adam Taliaferro (D-Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem), Andrew Zwicker (D-Somerset, Mercer, Middlesex, Hunterdon), and Verlina Reynolds-Jackson (D-Mercer, Hunterdon) issued the following joint statement on the law:

“We should all want every eligible voter to be able to participate in elections. The more people who vote, the better representation New Jerseyans will have at the polls.

“Today, with this law, we clarify the intent of the original law and remove any obstruction under current statute that would prevent a registered voter from casting their ballot by mail.

“The vote by mail option helps seniors who may have limited mobility, members of the military who are stationed in other states or overseas, out-of-state college students and hardworking residents with hectic work schedules.

“Every eligible voter must have the opportunity to perform their civic duty in the way that is most convenient for them.”
