O’Donnell: Marriage Equality Ruling a Civil Rights Triumph

(TRENTON) – Assemblyman Jason O’Donnell (D-Hudson), a sponsor of the marriage equality legislation passed last year by the legislature, but vetoed by the governor, issued the following statement Friday praising the Mercer County Superior Court ruling which gives same-sex couples in New Jersey the right to marry:

“New Jersey made second class citizens of gay couples by denying them the right to marry, so I am ecstatic that the superior court saw civil unions for what they were and mended this wrong.

“This is a major win for every same-sex couple who has simply asked for the same rights and benefits allotted to straight couples.

“I hope that the governor will do what is right and reconsider his decision.

“It is never too late to adjust a stance, especially when it is so unjust.”
