Pintor Marin, Speight, Houghtaling, Downey Bill Designating June 10 as “Portugal Day” Clears Legislature, Heads to Governor’s Desk

Measure Recognizes and Celebrates Portuguese Contributions to New Jersey

In an effort to highlight and celebrate the historical significance of June 10 to New Jersey’s more than 76,000 Portuguese residents, a joint resolution designating this date as “Portugal Day” in New Jersey has the cleared the Legislature, with final approval by the Senate, 38-0 on Thursday. It now heads to the Governor for further consideration.

The resolution (AJR-196) highlights the date of death–June 10, 1580—of Portuguese literary icon Luís Vaz de Camões who authored Portugal’s national epic poem, “Os Lusíadas.” The piece celebrates the 15th-century Portuguese explorations of that country.

Assembly Democrats Eliana Pintor Marin (D-Essex), Shanique Speight (D-Essex), Eric Houghtaling (D-Monmouth) and Joann Downey (D-Monmouth), sponsors of the resolution, issued the following joint statement:

“This resolution helps celebrate the contributions that Portuguese and Portuguese-Americans make to New Jersey. Most notably in Newark’s Ironbound section, the Portuguese community’s rich history, unique culture, and delectable cuisines attract local, national and international visitors. The Ironbound, of which Ferry Street is the nucleus, boasts one of the most vibrant, thriving Portuguese communities in the United States. Long Branch is also a city flourishing with the rich traditions of the Portuguese culture.

“Thanks to their contributions, these communities are truly two gems of our state.”
