PLAN TO SHUTTER MEADOWLANDS LATEST ATTEMPT TO KILL BERGEN BY A MILLION CUTS

(TRENTON) — Bergen County’s Democratic legislative delegation – Senators Bob Gordon, Paul Sarlo and Loretta Weinberg and Assembly members Gordon Johnson, Fred Scalera, Gary Schaer, Valerie Vainieri Huttle, Joan Voss and Connie Wagner – today released the following joint statement regarding the final report of the Hanson Commission:

“The Hanson Commission made no consideration for the future of the Meadowlands complex or the thousands of jobs it supports. This is an incomplete, short-sighted plan created in a vacuum.

“While we respect the benefits the state and its residents reap from the success of gaming and entertainment venues elsewhere, we feel this plan simply represents a bail-out of a struggling industry at Bergen County’s expense.

“First came the drastic cuts to BergenCounty’s school and municipal aid that are driving up property taxes. Then there was the attempt to end the Blue Laws and destroy Bergen’s quality of life. Now, we have the plan to essentially shutter the Meadowlands.

“If Gov. Christie was ever trying to kill BergenCounty by a million cuts, this is it.”
