POU: CENSUS DATA MUST LEAD TO LEGISLATIVE MAP THAT ENABLES OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERYONE

(TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Nellie Pou (D-Passaic/Bergen) released the following statement Thursday upon the release of new U.S. Census data for New Jersey:

“Now that we have this data in hand, we must give it a thorough analysis and make certain our state gets a fair legislative map that will help ensure a Legislature as diverse as New Jersey.
“These numbers cannot be used to justify a strategy that takes New Jersey back to the dark ages.
“Any strategy to pack African-Americans, Latinos, Asian-Americans and other minorities into single districts would give us a Legislature that does not reflect New Jersey’s reality.
“The experience of last decade has vindicated the creation of districts that enabled more opportunities for minority candidates. That has served our state and its people well.”
